SACAT is a South Australian Tribunal established in 2015 which offers dispute resolution services across a wide range of areas of law in South Australia.
In May 2020 SACAT will be conferred jurisdiction under Veterinary Practice Act 2003.
The jurisdiction under the Veterinary Practice Act 2003 will involve the hearing of reviews/appeals of registration decisions made by the Veterinary Surgeons Board of South Australia and the determination of professional disciplinary complaints.
SACAT will sit with Assessors with expertise and/or experience as outlined below:
Veterinary surgeons with experience or knowledge relating to animals used for primary production or horses
Veterinary surgeons with experience or knowledge relating to other animals
Persons (not being veterinary surgeons) with experience or knowledge relating to animal health, safety and welfare
For the purposes of the South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal Act 2013 an Assessor is a qualified industry or technical expert in their respective field. An Assessor will form part of a multi-disciplinary panel (sitting with legally qualified members) to hear and decide applications. The expertise and advice provided by an assessor will assist in comprehending complicated technical evidence or concepts in order to assist the panel to reach the correct and preferable legal decision, and ensure the decision has the preferable practical application within the respective industry.
The roles are utilised on a needs basis and accordingly it may be that you are called upon once or twice over the space of a few years, sometimes more or sometimes less. SACAT usually schedules hearings with at least one month's notice and will endeavour to fit around your other work commitments where possible. Hearings may vary in length between half a day to multiple days.
